Umamu
‘My life has been a journey towards Umamu’ explains Chief Executive Charmaine Saw. The palindrome of the name she says is inspired by balance and contentment.
She was brought up both in Eastern and Western cultures, graduating in natural sciences and training as a chef. Her passion for the Arts and experience as a management consultant have contributed to her building the business creatively yet professionally.
The estate, with its plantings dating back to 1978, of Cabernet Sauvignon (6ha), Chardonnay (3.5ha), Semillon (2.2ha), Shiraz (1.7ha),Sauvignon Blanc (1.5ha), Merlot (0.9ha) and Cabernet Franc (0.7ha) was purchased in 2004. The first vintage under the Umamu label followed in 2005.
There is a strong emphasis on maximising the natural attributes of the vineyard and working alongside nature to achieve balance and equilibrium in all the varietals. The aim is to produce elegant wines which drink well on their own but also pair well with food.
